Arnold Schwarzenegger, also known as the Austrian Oak, is unanimously viewed as the greatest bodybuilder of all time.
Arnold is one of the few people that manages to define their sport. Like Michael Jordan and basketball; or Pele and football.
Modern bodybuilding is a far cry from what it was in Arnold’s day — the famous golden era. To see what bodybuilders looked like 50 years ago, check out this post by Inside Bodybuilding.
Surprisingly, for a long time Arnold’s physique was unfashionable, deemed as not big or ripped enough. .
Thus, bodybuilding evolved (arguably for the worse) in the ’90s with the likes of Dorian Yates and Ronnie Coleman focusing more on massthetics — rather than aesthetics. As decades passed by, this look only resulted in more people admiring Arnold’s classic physique.
Fashions come and go, and many in the bodybuilding community thought that the mass monsters of the modern age would eventually be replaced by the more aesthetic physiques of the ’70s. So far, this has not happened. 2019’s winner, Brandon Curry has an incredible physique, but it is certainly more mass-focused than Arnold’s body.
However, things may slowly be changing. Here are five bodybuilders who tried to look like Arnold.
Bodybuilder #1: Calum Von Moger
This Australian bodybuilder definitely reminds us of a young Arnold, particularly the jaw line! In fact, Calum has actually played Arnold in the film “Bigger”. He has modeled for Gucci, becoming the first bodybuilder to do so, and starred in Generation Iron II.
This career trajectory definitely reminds us of Arnold, though thanks to how Mr Olympia is judged, Calum is unlikely to emulate the same success as Arnold which helped cement his legacy.
The fact is, if you want somebody who looks as close to Arnold as possible, Calum Von Moger is your man. We look forward to seeing how his career pans out.
Bodybuilder #2: Anton Ryskin
Nicknamed the Russian Arnold, Anton Ryskin really does look like The Oak. He’s even grown his hair to look similar to Arnold. He wears similar clothes too, so that sometimes it is difficult to tell the difference between the two!
Physically, Ryskin is huge. He has clearly gone for Arnold’s physique. While his upper back could use some work, his arms and legs are remarkably similar.
Check out this YouTube video to see what we mean.
While Von Moger may have a physique (and jawline) that are a closer match to Arnold, Ryskin has put more work into imitating his idol. His haircut, the clothes he wears, and his poses are remarkably similar. An excellent Arnold-like bodybuilder.
Bodybuilder #3: Muhammed Ibrahimov
Muhammed had to be on this list because he is so often compared to Arnold. However, he is probably the weakest candidate on this list. Not physically weak, however his facial features look the least like Arnold.
He is a Chechen bodybuilder who lives in Russia. There are definitely similarities, his hairstyle is identical for starters! His posing routine is very similar to Arnold’s too.
As weird as it may sound, he looks most like Arnie when wearing clothes. Check out this video of him posing near the Arnold Schwarzenegger statue in 2014.
This guy has a superb physique and in certain images and videos he does look a lot like Arnold.
Bodybuilder #4: Joel Kellet
If Von Moger is the closest looking Arnold ‘clone’, and Ryskin has the style — Kellet has Arnold’s physique. Well, not quite. His arms are a bit smaller, and his chest is proportionately bigger, but other than that it is uncanny.
Check out this comparison video.
The waist to chest ratio is almost identical, with a huge chest and tiny waist helping Kellet really stand out from the other Arnold lookalikes. This is the one area that Kellet really outdoes Von Moger.
One area that he could work on would be his triceps. When you compare his arm size to Arnie’s, you can see that the biceps are a little bit smaller but decent enough. But the actual circumference of the arm is much smaller. This can only be down to smaller triceps.
Not that Kellet’s triceps are small, just they’re not at Arnold’s level.
Bodybuilder #5: Onome Egger
The final bodybuilder on our list is half Austrian/half Nigerian bodybuilder Onome Egger.
That’s right, he’s actually from a small Austrian village. You can’t get more Schwarzenegger than that!
Onome has an incredible physique, with incredible arms and shoulders. His abs are possibly even better than Arnold’s were. He doesn’t quite have the chest to waist ratio that Arnold did, but his legs are equally as impressive.
Check out his Instagram account to see what we mean. Onome claims to be a natural bodybuilder, which if true means he is even better developed than Arnold was before he started taking ‘supplements’.
Honorable Mention: Wesley Vissers
Although this is the top 5 five bodybuilders who tried to look like Arnold; really there is a sixth who deserves at least a mention. While Wesley Vissers has stated outright that he does not train to look like Arnold, there is certainly a resemblance.
Vissers has a fantastic physique, his legs are incredible and his biceps rival those of the Oak himself. Facially there is little resemblance, though both men have a proper jaw line. Visser does a decent impression of Arnold when posing, but we’re not sure if this is intentional or not.
The bodybuilders we’ve mentioned in this article are all excellent examples of men who’ve been inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger. They are also fantastic examples of the type of physique you can sculpt – when you focus on aesthetics, rather than mass.
During the ’70s, bodybuilding was considered more than a sporting event — it was an art. It would be hard to argue that modern bodybuilding has taken a step away from art, but with young men such as these, bodybuilding could finally make a return to its roots.
But what do you think? Let us know in the comments section who you think out of these six bodybuilders best encapsulates Arnold. Or tell us if we have missed anyone out. Do you think that trying to find an Arnold “clone” is a worthwhile endeavor, or should these men focus on carving out their own path?
