The New Zealand batsman scored 99 off 59 balls, Ashwin said – four days late

New Delhi: New Zealand cricketer Devon Conway, 29, could not be sold at the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction last week, though he set a base price of Rs 50 lakh. On this Ashwin joked on Twitter that Devon Conway was only late for 4 days but what an innings. Conway made 184/5 in 20 overs against Australia from 19/3 and scored an unbeaten 99 off 59 balls while playing a superb innings. “Devon Conway is 4 days late, but what an innings,” Ashwin tweeted.

The New Zealand team, which went down to bat first, was initially shocked. Because, Daniel Sims dismissed opener Martin Guptill on the third ball of the match. After that, captain Ken Williamson was also out in the next over. With this, New Zealand lost three wickets before the end of the powerplay. Conway then teamed up with Glenn Phillips to put New Zealand’s innings on track. Both added 74 for the fourth wicket before Marcus Steinis broke the partnership. In the 13th over, Stoinis dismissed Phillips to take New Zealand to 93/4. But Conway continued his superb form and completed his half-century in just 36 balls.

Conway and Jimmy Nisham combined for 34 in the next three overs with seven overs to spare. In the 17th over, Richardson broke a good partnership between the two by dismissing Jimmy Neesham, but Conway continued to try to make it 184/5 in 20 overs for New Zealand. With that, New Zealand won the match by 53 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match T20 series.
