Proud Boys Pledge Allegiance to Trump After Debate Shout Out

The Proud Boys, a far-right extremist group, took to social media to celebrate the shout out they got from President Donald Trump during the first presidential debate, NBC News reports.

The group was brought up after debate moderator Chris Wallace asked the president to condemn white supremacy during a segment that focused on race. Wallace asked the president whether he would tell white supremacist groups that contributed to violence during protests to “stand down.”

Trump then asked for name to call out and former Vice President Joe Biden mentioned the Proud Boys. Trump told the group to “stand back and stand by.”

“Proud Boys, stand back and stand by, but I’ll tell you what, somebody’s got to do something about antifa and the left, because this is not a right-wing problem. This is a left-wing problem,” Trump said.

The group then took to the social media app Telegram to share that they got the president’s message.

“Standing down and standing by sir,” the account wrote.

The account then posted two videos of the answer, including one with the caption “God. Family. Brotherhood,” which showed a man howling at the TV in response to Trump’s response, according to NBC News.

Others on social media who identify with the group posted that they were also “standing down and standing by.” A social media account associated with the group made “Stand back. Stand by” part of its new logo, the outlet reports.

Proud Boys organizer Joe Biggs also posted after the debate that he was “standing by,” and he said the president “basically said to go f— them up.”

“President Trump told the proud boys to stand by because someone needs to deal with ANTIFA… well sir! we’re ready!!” Biggs wrote.
