Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., ridiculed CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer in a rare contentious on-air exchange Tuesday, calling him an “apologist” for Republicans and telling him he did not know what he was “talking about” in an interview about a long-debated second coronavirus relief/stimulus bill.
“What I say to you is, I don’t know why you’re always an apologist and many of your colleagues are apologists for the Republican position,” Pelosi said.
The contemptuous remarks came after Blitzer began the exchange asking Pelosi to respond to a Twitter post by liberal Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., suggesting Pelosi consider the White House’s $1.8 trillion package of benefits, in contrast to the Pelosi’s demand of a $2.2 trillion package. Elements of the previous package – such as enhanced unemployment benefits – expired at the end of July.
The Democrats’ offer is lower than its original $3.4 trillion demand, while the Republicans’ have increased their offer from an original $1 trillion. Other Democrats, such as failed Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang, also have called for Pelosi to consider the Republicans offer saying Americans are in need.
“Ro Khanna, that’s nice – that isn’t what we’re going to do,” Pelosi said. “And nobody’s waiting until February. I want this very much now because people need help now. But it’s no use giving them a false thing just because the president wants to put a check with his name on it in the mail.
“Andrew Yang, he’s lovely,” Pelosi continued. “Ro Khanna, he’s lovely. They are not negotiating this situation. They have no idea of the particulars.”
When pressed if the reluctance to consider the White House offer was to deny “the president to take credit if there’s a deal,” Pelosi snapped.
“I don’t care about that,” she said. “With all due respect, and you know we’ve known each other a long time, you really don’t know what you’re talking about.”
