OMB Director Vought: Trump Protecting Cities With Funding Threat

The decision to declare New York City, Seattle, and Portland as “anarchist jurisdictions” and potentially withhold federal funding from them came because President Donald Trump wants to protect their citizens’ safety, White House Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought said Tuesday.

That means that if New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio needs the $9 million he says is necessary to fill the city’s budget hole, then he needs to provide safety and security to his citizens, Vought told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo.

“[He needs to] allow his police forces to actually function properly so people in those cities can be safe,” said Vought.

Earlier this month, Trump asked the Justice Department to determine if any jurisdictions are not properly enforcing the law. He has also criticized Democrat-led cities for the response to the growing protests and acts of violence in their communities.

The government is examining which programs would be affected, Vought said, but as for now, a look is being taken at community economic development programs.

“Why should hard-earned taxpayer dollars go to a city to redevelop a community that is on fire?” said Vought. “Why would we allow public transportation grants to go to a city when buses and metro stops are being vandalized, looted?”

People in the cities involved are also opposed to federal funds going to them in that case, he added.

Vought also criticized the Democrats’ stopgap bill to keep the government open through Dec. 11, because it did not include the White House’s requests for farm aid or additional school lunch assistance.

“We wish the speaker would stop playing politics with our nation’s farmers,” said Vought of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “It is vital that we embed the money for the farmers to be replenished in this account.”

House leaders Tuesday delayed plans on the funding measure, reports Roll Call. A House Democrat confirmed lawmakers were “trying to reach the broadest possible agreement on agriculture and nutrition provisions.”
