Seizing on The New York Times report of President Donald Trump’s tax returns, the Biden campaign has posted a “Trump Tax Calculator.“
The pseudo-tool subtracts $750 — the sole amount The Times says Trump paid in 2017 — from whatever total you put in.
“Do you pay more or less in federal income taxes than our ‘billionaire’ president? Use this calculator to find out,” the website pages reads. Capitalizing on the critical report, the campaign included a red donate button in the upper right corner and a field to enter your email address, aiming to collect contributions from people angry about the president’s purported low tax payment.
The tool is accompanied by this text: “Mad? Us too. Join our campaign to elect Joe Biden and make ‘billionaires’ like Donald Trump pay their fair share.”
The report by The Times may also counter a potential Republican talking point at Tuesday night’s debate — the claim that Biden aims to raise taxes.
In a further dig at the president, both Biden and his running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., released their 2019 tax returns Tuesday before the debate. Biden and his wife Jill paid $299,349 in taxes last year, while Harris and her husband Doug Emhoff paid $1,185,628, according to The Hill.
Trump defended himself over the tax report via Twitter, saying he “paid many millions of dollars in taxes but was entitled, like everyone else, to depreciation & tax credits.”
“Also, if you look at the extraordinary assets owned by me, which the Fake News hasn’t, I am extremely under leveraged — I have very little debt compared to the value of assets.”
He has not yet released his tax returns, saying he is constrained from doing so while under audit.
