A Georgetown University football player has been charged with murder following the fatal shooting of a 30-year-old man in July. Dijon Williams, 21, was arrested in Atlanta on Monday evening on a warrant charging him for the murder of Nurudeen Thomas, 30, who died in the hospital after being shot in the hip on July 21, according to Washington Post.
Georgetown University issued a statement Tuesday revealing that Williams, a wide receiver, has been suspended.
“Georgetown University became aware of charges against Dijon Williams this evening,” the statement read. “While we are working to learn more information, we will cooperate fully with any investigation and we stand prepared to offer resources to members of our community who may be affected by this news. At this time, there are no indications that the alleged crime took place near the University.”
According to the university, a student who is arrested could be suspended or dismissed from the school, according to its code of conduct. Williams is awaiting extradition to Washington, D.C.
Williams attended Miller Grove High School in Georgia. He was team captain of the football team as a senior. At Georgetown University, he played 10 games with the Hoyas during his freshman year and five games as a junior. He missed his sophomore season after being sidelined by injury.
