Dem Sen. Schumer: RBG ‘Turning Over in Her Grave’ Over Barrett

Late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg had a dying wish the next president choose her successor and she “must be turning over in her grave up in heaven” to see Judge Amy Coney Barrett, the person President Donald Trump nominated to replace her, “seems to be intent on undoing all the things” she did, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Saturday.

“A vote for Judge Barrett is a vote to take away healthcare and its protections for over 130 million Americans who now have protections against pre-existing conditions,” Schumer told reporters. “Over 40 million Americans that pay less for drugs on Medicare. Close to 10 million Americans that will lose their healthcare altogether. A vote for Amy Coney Barrett is a dagger aimed at the heart of the healthcare protections Americans so desperately need and want.”

He added Trump has “put Americans’ healthcare at grave risk” by nominating Barrett, particularly at a time when the COVID pandemic continues to grow.

“Healthcare is the most important issue on the ballot to Americans and as Americans learn Judge Barrett’s views on healthcare and so many other issues, she will become less and less popular, and hopefully they will call their senators and say don’t vote for someone who will take away my healthcare,” Schumer said.

Barrett’s record also makes clear women’s reproductive freedom will be at risk, Schumer said.

“Labor rights will be eliminated,” he said. “Judge Barrett and those from the federalist society want to make America a right to work state which would get rid of labor unions. Our environmental rights would be greatly hurt with Judge Barrett on the court. The Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, all efforts to stop global warming would be hurt. LGBTQ rights would be harmed.”

He also accused Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Trump of having “stolen two judges” from Americans, by blocking President Barack Obama’s pick, Merrick Garland, and rushing Barrett’s confirmation.
