The fourth season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina will land on Netflix on December 31st, but what fans really want to know about is the links to Riverdale.
It was announced in July of this year that the fourth season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina would be the last, and though that alone hurt fans, what it meant for Riverdale was even worse.
So, how will the cancellation affect Riverdale?
There was supposed to be a crossover
After the news broke of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina cancellation, creator Roberto Aguirre Sacasa took to Twitter to let fans know what it was taking away:
“Thank you for all the love, #sabrinanetflix fans. Part four is our best yet and part five, ‘witch war’ would’ve been AMAZING. To be continued in the pages of #CAOS comic book,” he tweeted alongside an image of a Sabrina and Riverdale crossover.
Both Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale are set in the same fictional universe, both being based on Archie comics. Riverdale is on the other side of Sweetwater river from Greendale, where Sabrina is set.
Will there ever be a crossover?
Although the planned crossover between the shows in season 5 won’t happen, that’s not to say there won’t even be one.
Recently, actress of Sabrina, Kiernan Shipka, said in a roundtable interview:
“”Honestly, I just think Riverdale could use a witch. They’re going through a ton of stuff and they need some celestial whatever kind of vibes! They need a bit of extra power, they need someone who knows reincarnation, necromancy. They need that in their world and, I don’t know, I just think it would be a fun world if the two collided at some point”
Easter eggs in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina might not have got the Riverdale crossover it deserved, but there’s enough Easter Eggs to fill the hole in your life.
The biggest link between the shows is the storyline of season 3 episode 3, in which Sabrina and her cousin Ambrose left Greendale to travel to Riverdale to collect King Heron’s crown. The last known person to have the crown was Benjamin Blossom, an assumed ancestor of none other than Cheryl Blossom.
Sabrina retrieves the crown by tapping one of the maple tree’s owned by the Blossom family in Riverdale. On their way across to Riverdale, a graffiti can be seen in the background that reads: “Murder Capital of the World,” which is a nickname for Riverdale, accompanied by “JJ Wuz Here” and a crown symbol, which can mean only one person: Jughead Jones.
In season one, another Riverdale Easter egg can be spotted when Ben Button, a character from Riverdale, turns up as a pizza boy.
In episode 6 of season 3, Aunt Hilda references a certain diner in Riverdale, which is undoubtedly Pop’s Chock’Lit Shoppe. After being hexed into a spider woman, Hilda requests to spend her last hours in human form at a diner in Riverdale with “the juiciest hamburgers and thickest milkshakes”.
In that same episode, a man with a South Side Serpents jacket entered Dr. Cee’s “hoping to get some dinner,” only to be eaten by Hilda in her spider form.
