Who plays Violet Highway in EastEnders? What has Gwen Taylor been in before?


May 3rd’s episode of EastEnders introduced us to Callum’s grandmother, Violet Highway, but just who plays the fiery new character?

Since it first appeared on our screens over 36 years ago, EastEnders has seen countless characters come and go.

It’s always a big talking point when a new addition arrives and that was just the case on May 3rd as fans were introduced to Violet Highway.

The new cast member arrived in Albert Square like a tornado but just who plays Violet Highway and where might EastEnders fans have seen the actress in question before?

Violet’s EastEnders introduction

After a few rocky weeks for Callum and Ben, a new arrival to Albert Square looks set to test their relationship even further.

In a secretive meeting with Stuart, Ben is introduced to the Highway family matriarch, Violet.

She is the mother of Jonno Highway and subsequently is the grandmother of both Stuart and Callum.

Dressed in a bright red coat, Violet’s introduction is akin to someone setting off a loud alarm as the larger than life character wastes no time in making her presence felt.

Who plays Violet Highway?

  • Violet ‘Vi’ Highway is played by Gwen Taylor.

Born on February 19th, 1939, 82-year-old Gwen Taylor has been acting on our screens since 1972 and certainly makes the perfect first impression as a no-nonsense battleaxe.

As she’s only just been introduced, not too much is known about Violet Highway just yet but you can be sure Gwen Taylor’s character is set to make quite the impact over the next few episodes.

As mentioned, Gwen Taylor’s on-screen acting debut came in 1972, this came in an episode of ITV’s Kate.

Since then, Gwen has appeared in a whopping 90 acting roles according to IMDb with her most notable appearances coming in Heartbeat, Barbara, 2015’s The Lady in the Van, Monty Python’s The Life of Brian and 47 episodes of Coronation Street where she played the character Anne Foster between 2011 and 2012.
