Who is the narrator in The Haunting of Bly Manor?

  • The narrator is an older version of the character Jamie and is played by Carla Gugino.

The narrator, or rather storyteller, is an older version of the character of Jamie who we meet in episode 1.

The storyteller is played by 49-year-old actress Carla Gugino who is best known for her roles in 2009’s Watchmen, Sin City, American Gangster and even The Haunting of Hill House where she played the role of Olivia Crain.

As we see throughout the nine-episode series, Jamie and Dani grow close and after it seems that Viola, the ghostly Lady of the Lake at Bly Manor, has been defeated, start a new life together in the US.

However, Dani had not been allowed to leave without consequence as Viola had managed to possess her and eventually drove Dani mad, almost causing her to strangle Jamie, resulting in Dani travelling back to Bly Manor and take Viola’s place as the Lady of the Lake.

Fans react to Carla Gugino as the narrator

The inclusion of a narrator in The Haunting of Bly Manor has proven to be a popular choice among fans with many saying it helps to ramp up the tension.

However, others have been less than convinced by Carla Gugino’s attempt at an English accent.

One fan on Twitter wrote: “started watching ‘the haunting of Bly manor’ on Netflix and the description from the narrator is amazingly detailed and builds up tension so well, thinking of showing my year 10s a few clips of it if I can for their Paper 1 English language!!”

While another added: “Enjoying the Haunting of Bly Manor but so distracted by the weird accents, particularly the narrator’s. If they wanted her to be from Yorkshire couldn’t they have employed a real northerner to do it? It’s Dick Van Dyke levels of distracting”

And finally, this fan commented: “The narrator in The Haunting of Bly Manor is annoying me. Are you going for Yorkshire? Are you going for Essex? Cockney? What is it?!”

The Haunting of Bly Manor, which stars Carla Gugino as its narrator, is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on October 9th, 2020.
