Marcella returned to ITV on January 26th for its third series but fans have been left asking “Who is Alex Browne?” in regards to the tribute in episode 1.
After last appearing on our screens in 2018, Marcella returned to ITV on January 26th for its long-awaited third series.
There was plenty of drama in store in series 3’s opening episode but one of the biggest talking points came just before the closing credits with a touching tribute to Alex Browne.
But just who is Alex Browne and why did Marcella pay tribute to him?
Marcella season 3 on ITV
After airing on Netflix internationally in June 2020, season 3 of Marcella finally premiered on ITV on Tuesday, January 26th, 2021.
After the horrors of season 2, the new batch of eight episodes sees Marcella assume a new identity, Keira Devlin.
She is now working undercover in Northern Ireland and must get close to the almost invincible Maguire crime family.
Marcella pays tribute to Alex Browne
Just before the credits rolled at the end of the opening episode, Marcella made a touching tribute.
The message that appeared on screen simply read:
“In loving memory of Alex Browne.”
Who is Alex Browne?
- It appears that the Alex Browne commended in Marcella series 3 was a soldier from Northern Ireland.
There is little information about Alex Browne online but according to the Belfast Telegraph, the veteran soldier passed away on July 12th, 2020 after tragically taking his own life.
The publication reports that Alex, who served in the Royal Irish Regiment, was one of two servicemen to die by suicide within a few weeks of each other.
It’s unclear exactly how Alex Browne was involved in ITV’s Marcella but the most obvious link is that series 3 was both set and filmed in Northern Ireland.
Marcella season 3 began airing at 9pm on ITV on January 26th while the full series is available to stream now on ITV Hub.
