Ratched on Netflix

Ratched arrived on Netflix on September 18th, 2020.

The eight-episode series tells the story of nurse Mildred Ratched before the events of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.

In 1947, Mildred Ratched is welcomed as a psychiatric nurse at Lucia State Hospital but beyond her well-kept and stylish exterior, a darkness begins to fester within.

Ratched’s theme song

  • Ratched’s opening theme song is Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns.

The piece of classical music was written by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns in 1874, two years after the piece began its existence as an art song by Henri Cazalis.

The original song’s vocals were replaced by the piercing violin we hear in the piece of music now, creating the perfect theme song for the Netflix thriller.

Other places you’ve heard it

Danse Macabre has been in-use in the film and TV world for a number of years and has featured in a wide array of productions.

The piece of music has featured in the following:

  • The Disney animated films Mickey’s House of Villains and Mickey Mouse Works.
  • Jonathan Creek, where Danse Macabre is also the theme music.
  • The Dance of Death episode of Grimm which was named after the piece of music.
  • The 1993 western film, Tombstone.
  • The 2011 film Hugo.
  • Buffy the Vampire Slayer, in the episode named Hush.
  • And finally, in Shrek the Third during Prince Charming’s climactic stage play.

Ratched, which features Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre as its theme music, is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on September 18th, 2020.
