What happened to Josie in Riverdale? Where is she? Let’s get the character’s path explored as fans work through season 5.
The 2010s ushered in a wealth of great shows. Although, many would argue that none quite match up to Riverdale.
Developed by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, this US teen drama based on Archie Comics characters premiered back in 2017 and instantly became an obsession for some audiences.
Recently, fans were welcomed back to the titular town for season 5, which began airing on Wednesday, January 20th 2021.
An ensemble of familiar faces returned. However, a glaring omission from the latest season is Josie McCoy, played by Ashleigh Murray.
So, what happened to Josie in Riverdale?
What happened to Josie in Riverdale?
- Josie severed ties with Archie and headed off on tour with her father, accompanying him on a string of shows across the country.
Her last Riverdale appearance was in season 4 episode 1, titled ‘Chapter Fifty-Eight: In Memoriam’.
In ‘Chapter Seventy-Nine: Graduation’, we witness the last day of school alongside Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and the rest of the faces we’ve grown to know.
They place a number of items in a time capsule to commemorate their time and experiences at Riverdale High. Kevin puts in some cat ears on Josie’s behalf and says that he wished she were there with them.
While the character last appeared in season 4, it’s important to note that she went on to be in the Riverdale spin-off series, Katy Keene.
In the show, we followed her alongside the titular character (played by Lucy Hale) in New York, which is where she headed after touring with Myles.
Although the series was cancelled after just one season, it’s likely that the character is still pursuing a music career in New York.

Ashleigh Murray talks Katy Keene
While in conversation with Discussing Film in 2020, Ashleigh was asked about Josie’s transition – as well as her own – from Riverdale to Katy Keene:
“Everything that happened between her leaving Riverdale and coming to New York hasn’t been fleshed out. It’s something that I’ve just kind of had to make up on my own. Just to give myself a little backstory. But, her transition while in New York, I pull a lot from my own experience of being brand new and living in a big city that I’ve always wanted to move to while pursuing my dream…”
She added: “… Obviously, I take a lot of what the writers give me, I want to make it my own, but there are a lot of things that Josie does and says that don’t align with who I am. So that’s where my line is like, ‘Okay well, I wouldn’t do that, but I’ve got to find a way to make it work’.”
