What castle is used as Balmoral in The Crown?
- Ardverikie Castle is used as the exterior location for Balmoral in The Crown.
For Balmoral’s interior, a number of stately homes and historical manor houses were used including Hedsor House in Buckinghamshire and Knebworth House in Hertfordshire according to the Independent.
Ardverikie Castle, which bears an impressive resemblance to the real Balmoral, is located near Loch Laggan in Inverness-shire, Scotland and began its life as a hunting lodge before being expanded into the grand house it is now in the 1800s.
Ardverikie Castle as a filming location
Ardverikie Castle and the surrounding estate are currently used as a wedding venue and holiday destination with the estate renting out lodges on the estate to customers.
Beyond that, The Crown’s Balmoral filming location has also been used on a number of big-name film and TV productions.
Ardverikie Castle is best-known on-screen for its stint in the BBC drama Monarch of the Glen which ran between 2000 and 2005.
However, other projects filmed at the castle include Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, Outlaw King, Outlander and most recently was used as a location in the upcoming James Bond film, No Time to Die.
