Zendaya became the youngest ever winner of a Primetime Emmy award in 2020 and her ‘joyful’ acceptance speech has left Euphoria fans in tears.
Zendaya has been one of the hottest prospects in the acting world for a number of years.
The rising star made a name for herself on the Disney Channel in shows such as Shake It Up and K.C. Undercover and quickly made a huge impression in the wider industry with her roles in Marvel’s Spider-Man films and The Greatest Showman.
But now, all of that early promise has been well and truly realised as the 24-year-old became the youngest ever winner of the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award at the 2020 Primetime Emmys.
Naturally, there has been an immense outpouring of support for Zendaya and the Euphoria star’s endearing acceptance speech.
Zendaya wins Primetime Emmy award
On September 20th, in the most lowkey Emmy awards ceremony since the event was founded, Zendaya won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
The award came for Zendaya’s visceral performance as Rue Bennett in HBO’s Euphoria.
At the age of just 24, Zendaya becomes the youngest ever winner of the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award.
In doing so, she also overcame some tough competition from some of the biggest names in the industry including Jennifer Aniston, Jodie Comer, Sandra Oh, Laura Linney and the Oscar-winning Olivia Colman.
Emmys 2020: Zendaya’s acceptance speech
Clearly thrilled by her Emmy win, Zendaya’s acceptance speech was an endearing and energetic one.
The 24-year-old, speaking from home via video link, paid tribute to her fellow nominees and thanked her family, friends and management team in typical fashion as well as HBO and the team behind Euphoria for bringing such a daring series to our screens.
Zendaya also took a moment to praise today’s young generation saying: “I know this feels like a really weird time to be celebrating but I just want to say there is hope in the young people out there.
“I know that our TV show doesn’t always seem like a great example of that but there is hope in the young people.
“And I just want to say to all my peers out there doing the work in the streets, I see you, I admire and I thank you.”
It’s safe to say that Zendaya’s Emmy win and acceptance speech have both been a huge hit with fans who have taken to social media to heap praise on the star.
One fan on Twitter, who was lost for words, wrote: “Just saw @Zendaya’s acceptance speech and I am tearing up hdjwhdvdjehdhdhdns.”
While another added: “the second black woman and the youngest person to win yaaas @Zendaya so proud of you sis.”
This fan on Twitter wrote: “Zendaya made me cry with her Euphoria performance and with her joyful acceptance speech.”
And finally, plenty of fans also took the opportunity to call for Euphoria season 2:
Euphoria, for which Zendaya won her Primetime Emmy award, is slated to return for a second season but thanks to delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s unclear when Rue Bennett and co. will be returning to our screens.
