Police in riot gear stormed a rally on Sunday, removing hundreds of protesters by truck. At least four people have been reported killed and several others injured. A woman has died during a protest by teachers in the main city of Yangon. The cause of his death, however, is not yet known.
Opponents are demanding the end of military rule and the release of other leaders, including Supreme Leader Aung San Suu Kyi. Public outcry has intensified here after Myanmar’s ambassador to the United Nations issued a statement calling for action against the military regime.
On February 1, Myanmar’s military overthrew the government. The crisis was imposed by detaining other leaders of the National League for Democracy, including the country’s supreme leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi.
