New Delhi: China’s world-famous short video mobile app Tiktok has decided to shut down its business in India forever. The decision was made by Bitdance, a company owned by Tiktok. The Indian government banned 59 Chinese mobile apps, including Tiktok and UC Browser, in June last year following a dispute with China. The Chinese mobile app, which has been banned in India due to rising tensions with China, is unlikely to be re-launched. Therefore, the company has decided to close down its business and leave India.
Chinese online video app Tiktok is currently the most popular mobile app in the world and has millions of users. The Indian government has decided to close down its business in India by banning the Tiktok app. As a result, more than 2,000 people working in Tiktok in India will lose their jobs.
Notably, India is one of the largest markets for TikTok and has over 200 million active users.
TikeTok’s Global Interim Head Vanessa Pappus and Global Business Solutions Vice President Blake Chandley said in an email to employees that they were reducing the size of the team and that the decision would affect all employees in India. It is very sad that after supporting more than 2000 of our employees in India for more than half a year, we have no choice but to reduce our workforce. We hope to relaunch TikTok in India and have the opportunity to support millions of users, artists, storytellers, academics and artists in India. Officials have expressed uncertainty over the company’s re-entry into India, but said hopes for a re-launch in India in the near future remain.
