Renewal status and potential release date for Crunchyroll anime – HITC

The first season of Rent-A-Girlfriend has just concluded, but fans are already wondering when the anime will return for season 2?

Rent-A-Girlfriend has become one of the most popular new series of 2020 and along with fellow originals Tower of God, In/Spectre and The God of High School, has made this a memorable summer of anime.

The season finale of Rent-A-Girlfriend premieres this Friday, but fans are already curious as to when the romantic-comedy will return for a second date.

Will there be a Rent-A-Girlfriend season 2?

  • It’s good news for fans of Rent-A-Girlfriend, the series has been officially renewed for a second season.

The announcement that Rent-A-Girlfriend would return for season 2 has just been made, although not many of us will not be surprised by this news.

The decision on whether to continue production on an anime usually relies on two factors: popularity and source material. Whilst we don’t have access to the statistics for viewers on Crunchyroll, Rent-A-Girlfriend remains the second most popular anime series currently airing on Netflix Japan (only being beaten by Fire Force).

Then we have the Rent-A-Girlfriend manga series, which is still ongoing and currently has over 150 published chapters. The consensus from most readers is that season 1 will only reach (roughly) chapter 50, so there was easily enough material for a second season to be produced – there is arguably enough to even make a third season straight away.

Rent-A-Girlfriend: Season 2 release date…

  • An official release date for the second season of Rent-A-Girlfriend not been announced, but we expect a summer 2021 premiere.

As previously stated, one of the biggest factors in the production of an anime is the source material, i.e. do the writers have enough chapters to make a whole anime season? Thankfully in the case of Rent-A-Girlfriend, that answer is yes.

So, we don’t have to wait for a brand-new original story to be produced, nor are there any major action scenes that require weeks of animating…everything is essentially ready to go.

However, as the ongoing public health crisis continues to cause production issues with countless anime projects, we shouldn’t expect a second season to premiere until summer 2021.
