Guest star spotlight
Patsy Kensit as Barbara Graham
Like many of her fellow characters in episdoe 1, Barbara Graham was a TV presenter in the 80s and was a popular figure. She now spends her time appearing in adverts and thinks she and her friends are almost untouchable.
Playing Barbara Graham is Patsy Kensit who fans will likely know best from lengthy stints on Holby City and Emmerdale as well as ITV’s Tina & Bobby, 1970s series The Foundation and the films Absolute Beginners and Lethal Weapon 2.
Martin Kemp as Mick Elkins
Martin Kemp takes on the role of Mick Elkins, a music executive whose success in the 80s has given him a comfortable life today. As with many music execs of the 80s, Mick is a very slippery character and is looked up to by the other members of the group as their de facto leader.
Fans will recognise Martin Kemp best for his stint in the band Spandau Ballet and as an actor he’s appeared in EastEnders, Serious and Organised, Family, a 2006 episode of Marple and 1990’s The Krays.
Cathy Tyson as Jackie Somner
Cathy Tyson takes on the role of Jackie Somner, another member of the group of friends who made it in the 80s.
Cathy made her first appearance on our screens in 1984’s Scully and has since appeared in the film Mona Lisa, Night & Day, Grange Hill, JoJo & Gran Gran and most recently had a voice role in the video game, Watch Dogs: Legion.
Rupert Graves as Gordon Elmwood
Fans will know Ruper Graves best for his seven-year stint on BBC One’s Sherlock where he played DI Lestrade.
Other recognisable roles include Last Tango in Halifax, The Family, Sky Atlantic’s Riviera and 2019’s The War of the Worlds adaptation.
Vince Leigh as Frankie Marsh
It’s best not to get too attached to Vince Leigh in McDonald & Dodds as his character, Frankie Marsh, is episode 1’s unfortunate murder victim.
Vince has a total of 19 acting credits to his name with his most prominent appearances coming in Trial & Retribution, A Touch of Trost, Family Affairs and the same 2006 episode of Marple that featured Martin Kemp. Sleeping Murder.
Rob Brydon as Roy Gilbert
And finally, we have Rob Brydon who takes on the role of Roy Gilbert from the Air Incident Investigation Agency. Roy comes from the same tree as DS Dodds and investigates the balloon crash with precision but his methodical methods frustrate DCI McDonald.
The lovable Rob Brydon is best known for his role as Bryn in Gavin & Stacey but he’s has also appeared in The Trip alongside Steve Coogan, Aardman’s Early Man, Little Britain, The Best of Men and Marion & Geoff among others.
McDonald & Dodds returns to ITV for season 2 at 8pm on February 28th, 2021.
