Brought to screens by Amy Poehler, Moxie released on Netflix on March 3rd, 2021. Let’s get to know the film’s cast, including trans character CJ and the actress who plays the role – Josie Totah.
Moxie is another fantastic offering from Netflix in 2021. From the woman who gave audiences Wine Country, Moxie is the second movie that Amy Poehler has directed.
Moxie: Meet CJ
At last, some well-overdue inclusivity is displayed in Netflix’s Moxie. The film features a trans character named CJ.
CJ is a student at Rockport High of Oregon.
Cast members also included Alycia Pascual-Peña, Hadley Robinson, Lauren Tsai, Sabrina Haskett, Patrick Schwarzenegger and more for the filming of Moxie.
As reported by Decider, the inclusion of a transgender actor such as Josie Totah shows an “effort toward intersectionalism“. Rather than casting a cis actor to play CJ, Josie was chosen for the role. Speaking to HuffPost, Josie said: “It is extremely imperative that trans people get to play trans roles and cis people should take a step back.“
Who is Josie Totah?
Josie Totah is a transgender actress who has been in the film industry since 2012. She’s 19 years old and was born on August 5th, 2001.
Prior to landing her role as CJ in Moxie, Josie has appeared in many TV series including New Girl, 2 Broke Girls, Glee and Nina Needs to Go.
Viewers of Moxie may recognise Josie from her role as Stuart Wooten in Disney’s Jessie, or as Lexi Haddad-DeFabrizio in Saved by the Bell. She also played Natalie in Big Mouth.
Josie transitioned in 2018 and as reported by HuffPost, she hoped that the character in Moxie would help “normalise” transgender people.
