Netflix’s Behind Her Eyes has left fans with plenty of questions since it released but just what is astral projection and is it real?
Behind Her Eyes has bewildered fans since it arrived on Netflix thanks to its perplexing characters and mind-bending themes.
The series centres on the concepts of lucid dreaming and astral projection with the latter proving to be a key plot point in the series.
But what exactly is astral projection and is the strange pheneomenon real?
Behind Her Eyes on Netflix
Behind Her Eyes arrived on Netflix on February 17th, 2021.
Based on the acclaimed Sarah Pinborough novel of the same name, the six-episode series tells the story of Louise who begins an affair with her new boss, David.
Matters are complicated when Louise bumps into Adele, David’s wife, and the pair begin an unlikely friendship.
However, nothing is as it seems in Behind Her Eyes and hints that David is controlling Adele are just the tip of an iceberg in mysterious and troubling goings-on.
Astral projection in Behind Her Eyes
Astral projection is the key plot point in Behind Her Eyes and is depicted as the soul leaving the body as a glowing ball of light.
In the series, it’s shown to be a person’s consciousness or soul leaving their body and being able to travel to places they’ve been to in the past.
After being introduced to the concept of lucid dreaming by Adele, Louise learns that she can also astral project.
On top of that, it’s also something that Adele and Rob experimented with years before and even saw the two switch bodies in a sinister plan by Rob in order to be with Adele’s husband, David.
Is astral projection real?
Astral projection is also referred to as having an out-of-body experience and while out-of-body experiences are not uncommon, daydreaming can be considered one, for example, the way astral projection is depicted in Behind Her Eyes, with glowing balls of light and body-swapping, does stray into the realm of fantasy.
According to OprahMag.com, an out-of-body experience takes place when “your brain’s body schema – its perception of your physical form – is altered. Nothing is ‘leaving’ your body, but your brain is not perceiving your body in the way that you are used to, which can sometimes give the impression that your consciousness is detached for a period of time.”
Astral projection and similar spiritual out-of-body experiences have appeared in cultures across the world for hundreds, if not thousands of years and there has been plenty of research into the topic if you want to learn more.
However, if you’re hoping to swap bodies with someone to get with their hunky Scottish husband as seen in Behind Her Eyes, then you might be a little disappointed.
Behind Her Eyes is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on February 17th, 2021.
