Hulu’s hit comedy-drama, ‘The Great’ was one of the standout shows of 2020, but has the series been renewed for season 2?
‘The Great’ is an American comedy miniseries loosely based on the rise of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia.
The season focuses on the early marriage between Peter the Third, Emperor of Russia and the young Catherine in 1762.
Elle Fanning (Catherine) and Nicholas Hoult (Emperor Peter) shine as the leads, having viewers in stitches with almost every interaction.
Season 1 of the satirical comedy-drama premiered in May 2020, but has The Great been renewed and what date could season 2 release online?
The Great: Renewal status
- It’s great news for fans of the historical comedy series, The Great has been renewed by Hulu for season 2 – Huzzah!
Let’s be honest, none of us are really surprised about this, The Great is easily one of the best shows of 2020. It’s not just me who thinks so, with the series holding a brilliant 88% on Rotten Tomatoes and an 8.1/10 on IMDB.
Back in May 2020, the cast and crew were quick to voice their opinions on the possibility of a second season.
Speaking at The Critics Association winter tour, Executive producer Marian Macgowan said: “We initially pitched six seasons. So we believe there’s sufficient material to take us through until she [Catherine] is an old woman.”
“There is a possibility, and it is open to having a second season. We can’t say that, we don’t know, but I definitely know that Tony [McNamara, writer] is for sure thinking beyond [season one]. He has more stories.” – Elle Fanning.
The Great season 2: Release date
At the time of writing, there is no official release date set for season 2 of The Great.
However, since filming on season 2 actually started in November 2020, it probably won’t be too long before Catherine and Peter return to our screens.
An optimistic prediction would be that season 2 will premiere in May-2021, but a more realistic estimation would be Summer.
The Great season 2: Storyline
Whilst there is no official information or leaks about the storyline for season 2, it’s safe to say that the plot will be a direct continuation from the season 1 finale.
Catherine has just decided to push forward with the coup, meaning we can imagine season 2 will follow her first few months adjusting to solo rule.
However, further afield, season 2 will likely revolve around the class divide and Catherine’s image with the Russian people.
Macgowan told Decider: “I think if season 2, if we were to be so lucky, we would certainly explore that [class divide] more. Because she would become more active and therefore it would be more relevant.”
Season 1 of The Great is available to view right now on Hulu.
