New Delhi: Vijay Mallya, convicted of contempt of the Supreme Court, did not appear for a discussion on the sentence today. The judges wondered how he is still sitting in the UK court despite losing the legal battle for extradition. The court reprimanded the fugitive businessman’s lawyer for not giving a clear answer and adjourned the hearing till November 2.
Mallya, who fled after embezzling thousands of crores from banks, has been convicted by the Supreme Court of contempt for not providing proper details of assets and illegally transferring money to the family’s foreign account. His application for reconsideration has also been rejected. In its August 31 order, the court set October 5 as the date for the sentencing hearing. He asked the Union Home Ministry to ensure Mallya’s presence.
Secret proceedings begin in UK court, the center said
As the bench of Justice Ashok Bhushan began its hearing today, the Centre’s counsel said, “All legal proceedings for extradition have been completed in the UK. The Supreme Court there also rejected Mallya’s appeal. But now a secret process has begun there. We are not parties to this. Therefore, we cannot say how long it will last. ”
At this point the judges asked Mallya’s lawyer, ‘The UK Supreme Court has also approved the extradition. So how is your client staying there so far? What secret process has been started there? How long will it last? ”
Advocate Ankur Sehgal, appearing for Mallya, said he had no information about this. The judges expressed their displeasure, saying, “Are you present for someone and unable to answer the question on his behalf?” The court asked the lawyer to present a clear answer. The matter will now be heard on November 2 at 2 p.m.
