Marcella season 3 on ITV

After airing on Netflix internationally in June 2020, season 3 of Marcella finally premiered on ITV on Tuesday, January 26th, 2021.

After the horrors of season 2, the new batch of eight episodes sees Marcella assume a new identity, Keira Devlin.

She is now working undercover in Northern Ireland and must get close to the almost invincible Maguire crime family.

The ending of Marcella season 3 explained

Throughout season 3 of Marcella, the undercover detective has almost lost her true identity at times.

Falling further and further into the persona of Keira, Marcella is on the verge of losing control completely.

However, at the very end of episode 7, Marcella has another of her trademark blackouts and awakens as her old self in a parked car in the middle of nowhere.

The final episode reveals that Marcella is not alone in the car as tucked away in the boot is a body. The body is that of Matthew who knew Marcella years ago.

She returns to the Maguire’s to learn that Finn is drastically unhappy that she dumped the body and reveals that Jack was the one who killed Matthew.

Chaos quickly ensues from here as in-fighting among the Maguires, and a revelation about Marcella’s true identity, threatens to let the situation get out of control, which it quickly does.

Before all hell is let loose, however, Jack breaks into Rav Sangha’s hotel room, which is plastered in photos of Marcella’s old life and he learns of her true identity.

He returns to tell Finn but the new head of the Maguire family – following Katherine’s stroke and Stacey’s imprisonment in the basement – has fallen for Marcella and refuses to take action.

Instead, Jack takes the photos and news of Marcella’s real identity to Rory who is more likely to ‘do the right thing’ but he is also reluctant to bloody his hands.

Eventually, all characters converge on the Maguire house and the proverbial well and truly hits the fan.

Frank Young – also seeking revenge for a lost child – and Jack Healy take each other out.

Meanwhile, Stacey shoots and kills Rory while Finn returns the favour by killing Stacey before he goes in pursuit of Marcella.

Their confrontation sees Marcella shoot and kill Finn, but only after he shoots Rav who has just arrived on the scene. Rav is certainly wounded in the shootout but it’s not clear if he’s killed for good.

Marcella then returns to the house for Stacey’s motherless baby, Katie, taking care of the child and completing her redemption after killing her own daughter.

The once-undercover cop has one final meeting with Katherine, revealing the fate of the Maguire family and transferring the entire Maguire family fortune to her own account before fleeing with the baby on a private plane to an unknown destination.

Does the ending set up season 4?

  • The possibility for more episodes is left decidedly ambiguous by season 3’s ending.

Marcella, now going under the name Miss Hart, receives a phone call while waiting at the airport.

However, before she can be dragged back into working on another case, she hangs up the phone and leaves to board her plane.

While the ending shows that Marcella is still in demand, her refusal to answer the call does suggest that Marcella’s story is over, at least for the time being.

Marcella season 3 is airing weekly on ITV while the full eight-episode series is available to stream now on ITV Hub.
