Crunchyroll renewal status and potential release date explained – HITC

The first season of The God of High School has only just concluded, but fans are already wondering when the hit anime is expected to return for season 2.

Between In/Spectre, Tower of God and The God of High School, it’s been an incredible summer for Crunchyroll original anime.

The latter series, The God of High School, arguably had the most attention on it leading up to the premiere in early-July with it being adapted from the hit Webtoon series. Thankfully, the anime adaptation has not disappointed, with some of the best-choreographed fight sequences many fans have ever seen

Now, the first round of The God of High School is officially over, here is everything that we know so far about season 2 of the hit anime.

Will there be a season 2 of The God of High School?

  • At the time of writing, The God of High School has not been renewed for a second season, but the hit anime is highly likely to return at some point.

Whilst there has not yet been an official announcement regarding the future of The God of High School, the series is highly likely to return for at least one more season. Anime renewals tend to be dependent on two factors; popularity and source material.

Whilst we may not have the official viewing figures for season 1, The God of High School is currently scoring a 4.3/5 on Crunchyroll, 7.45/10 on MyAnimeList and an 8.2/10 on IMDB – so the anime is definitely popular enough with fans to merit a second season.

There is also plenty of source material from the original Webtoon series that can be adapted for many more seasons of anime to come. Monsters & Critics broke down their predictions for how much material could be adapted and estimate that with the 480+ chapters of the Webtoon currently published, we could actually get up to six seasons of the anime.

Hopefully, an official announcement concerning season 2 of The God of High School within the next few weeks, so keep checking back in for updates.

The God of High School season 2 release date…

As The God of High School has yet to be renewed for a second season, an official release date remains unknown.

It was announced that MAPPA and Crunchyroll would be producing an anime adaptation of the popular Webtoon series in February 2020, but it’s safe to assume that production had started beforehand.

The issue with predicting potential release dates for upcoming, unconfirmed seasons of anime comes down to three factors; when production starts, the amount of source material that is available to use and how long it takes to animate.

On one hand, there is plenty of source material to adapt for a second season and production can start as soon as MAPPA are given the green light. However, it remains unclear how long it takes to actually animate The God of High School.

Those long, fierce fights that we all love The God of High School are likely to take an extremely long amount of time to produce, meaning that individual episodes may need longer to produce compared to a typical anime of similar length.

Whilst an optimistic prediction for the season 2 premiere would be April 2021, a more realistic expectation is that The God of High School will return in July 2021 – making it a regular on the summer slate. Again, we will update this article as soon as more information is officially revealed, so keep checking in.
