Amid political turmoil, Nepal recommends convening lower house on March 8

In a cabinet meeting convened by Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Friday, President Bidya Devi Bhandari has recommended convening a lower house meeting on March 7. The meeting was held at the Prime Minister’s official residence at Baluwatar. In addition to recommending a lower house meeting on March 7, the meeting also discussed other issues related to the ministries. This information was given by Minister for Land Management, Co-operation and Poverty Alleviation Shivamay Tumbhangfa

It also noted that Nepal’s Supreme Court had in recent days restored the lower house and directed the government to convene a session within 13 days. The country’s apex court will also overturn all decisions taken by the Oli government following the dissolution of the House of Representatives on December 20.

A constitutional bench of the Supreme Court in a hearing on Tuesday declared unconstitutional Prime Minister KP Oli’s recommendation to dissolve parliament on December 20. The court also directed the Prime Minister, the President and the Speaker of the House to convene a sitting of the lower house of Parliament within 13 days.
