According to the letter, “the new standardized religious indoctrination guidelines concocted by a team of government religious extremists constitute a severe threat to Americans’ freedom of religion and freedom from religion.”

Americans United for Separation of Church and State recently sent a public record request to 11 states seeking a list of textbooks and lesson plans that include references to God, including school prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Bible, the Koran, Hinduism, Buddhism, and the teachings of Jesus.

“The agenda for the unit on religion in the standards is clear: promote Christianity and the Bible to kids,” said the group’s Director of Research, Barry Lynn.

The letter notes that the standards allow public schools to teach creationism and intelligent design, and that they affirm the “value and importance of the role of religion in a democratic society.”

It goes on to point out that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that the Bible is an outdated and inaccurate view of God. Since this is still a constitutional issue, Americans United argues that the standards violate the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause and use taxpayer dollars to promulgate religion.
