Dr. Fauci’s Advice for Staying Healthy Until Summer 2022

Dr. Anthony Fauci says that while we may never get rid of the coronavirus entirely, by late 2021 or early 2022 Americans should be able to resume most pre-pandemic activities. That’s “if we deploy a vaccine and we implement public-health measures,” he said.

The 79-year-old head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told Business Insider that if we get to a very low level of the virus by people either being vaccinated or having been infected, we may be able to say it’s “close to absent” but not eradicated.

Fauci said he’s working 7 days a week, 18 hours a day dealing with pandemic issues but manages to walk three to four miles every evening with his wife. They keep a safe social schedule by eating on their deck with “people we have known for a long time who are equally as compulsive as we are about trying to protect yourself against infection,” he told Business Insider.

Fauci recently revealed that he also takes vitamin D and C supplements to lessen susceptibility to infection. He added that to boost immunity, people should “get a reasonable amount of sleep, get a good diet and try to alleviate stress, which we know can sometimes impact the immune system.”

He said that even if a vaccine is developed, it’s still important to adhere to public-health principles, such as continuing to wearing masks at social gatherings, since the effectiveness or immunogenicity may only be 70% according to a statement made by Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“You should never abandon public-health measures,” said Fauci. “I said a combination of an effective vaccine and adherence to certain public-health principles will get us to the point we want to be by the end of 2021.”
