6 Foods Men Should Eat for a Longer, Healthier Life

It used to be a macho thing to brag you are a “meat and potatoes” man, but experts say that while these foods can be part of most diets, men should focus on eating less protein and more fruits and vegetables to live a long, healthy life.

Samantha Cassetty, R.D., told “Today” that these foods are the most beneficial for men:

  1. Blueberries. Berries are full of antioxidants that help reduce the risk of cancer while being one of the best foods on the planet to preserve memory. A study published in the Annals of Neurology claims that the flavonoids, especially the anthocyanins found in blueberries, effectively lowered the mental decline of adults. The flavonoids, the components that give blueberries their color, can actually improve brain health, said the researchers.
  2. Salmon. The American Heart Association recommended that men eat fish two times a week, particularly fatty fish like salmon. Fatty fish are higher in omega-3 fatty acids, which fight inflammation and remove triglycerides from the blood. Tara Gidus Collingwood, R.D., told Newsmax that salmon is a complete protein, meaning it contains all of the essential amino acids. Protein is what our bodies use for growth, maintenance, and repair.
  3. Spinach. While all greens are good for you, Cassetty pointed out that spinach has a mild flavor, which is more appealing to guys who dislike strong or bitter tastes. One study suggested that older people who ate one serving of a green vegetable daily had less cognitive decline that those who didn’t. Spinach may also reduce your cancer risk and its key ingredients, lutein and zeaxanthin, protect your vision from damaging blue light emitted from many digital devices.
  4. Nuts. Spanish researchers said that eating a handful of nuts daily improved sex life. Nut eaters reported better orgasms and strong sexual drive compared to those who followed the standard American diet, according to Today.
  5. Avocado. Half an avocado provides approximately 25% of the daily recommended intake of vitamin K. According to Medical News Today, eating a diet with adequate vitamin K can help support bone health by increasing calcium absorption and reducing the urinary excretion of calcium. Avocados have more potassium than bananas. Potassium is a crucial mineral that helps regulate blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart attacks.
  6. Edamame. According to Today, prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer among men, and a recent study found that soy foods such as edamame may lower your risk of getting the disease.
